Imagine for a moment life with NO light. Light has a feeling. It is warm. It heats up plants and soils, the earth emits aromas because of the suns great power. Even when your eyes are closed you are aware of light. Every human sense uses “light” communication in one way or another. I believe an intelligent Creator knew the power of light to His creation.
Light deprivation is a real thing. Some people are greatly affected by winter weather. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is just that, a dis-order. Because the rays of the sun do not hit the same in winter, we have less sunlight and shorter days. Every aspect of our entire life is controlled by LIGHT.
We need vitamin D. The sun is the best source. Flowers won’t bloom without light. There are plenty of products on the market that attempt to simulate the sun. Artificial grow lights. Darkness increases the body production of Melatonin, a sleep related hormone. Animals hibernate. Plants stop growing. We as humans slow down and can suffer depression. NO light would be a serious bummer.
Genesis 1:16 (NKJV)
Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. [He made] the stars also.
God is a funny guy sometimes. Our sun is a pretty big star, He made that. That’s a big deal, at least to our survival, and as almost an after thought, “Oh yeah, I made the stars too.” The stars part, well that was just for fun!
Genesis 1:4 (NKJV)
And God saw the light, that [it was] good; and God divided the light from the darkness.
The Bible is like a great can of condensed bean soup. Thick and rich and full of nuance and flavor. God is a minimalist in His writings. We must use our brain to unpack the wealth of knowledge contained within its pages.
The light that we experience on a daily basis is a gift. We can’t earn light. We cannot comprehend light. But we can seek it’s origins. Of course I speak metaphorically, but literally also.
John 8:12 (NKJV)
Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
